A Fair tax is a national sales Tax

Thomas G. Brown |

Our current Federal Income tax lends itself to a a host of problems and short falls that can be addressed through it’s elimination and replacement with a national sales tax. If we had a universal sales tax on all good and services purchased by consumers this would get more folks to see what over spending by the government is costing them. Let’s face it if instead of the shell game of moving brackets up and down, tax credits, exemptions, and the like you just paid taxes on goods and services. If your $100 pair of shoes now cost $134 as a result of a national sales tax it would put a burden on congress to reduce spending instead of pitting differing tax brackets against each other. This class warfare only benefits politicians who. When you have to pay high taxes on goods and services you will do one of two things. One, you would purchase less and save more. Two, you will be more likely to potion Congress and the Federal Government to get on a budget that the country can afford. This being said lets look at the two systems.

Income tax requires a citizen to fill out in great detail what one has made in income over the past year. In addition a various other information such as marital status, address, work history, and a whole host of other personal information. This seems counter to what the founders of this country had in mind when they created this free society away from the prying eyes of England o its monarchy. An individual would simply pay a tax when he or she purchased a good or service. No identifier such as a social security number would be needed. You would simply pay the tax an move on with your day..

Currently there are added expenses endured by the citizen as a result of the income tax. These costs are accountants, lawyers, executors, and on and on. In addition to what you directly pay there is the payment to the IRS agents and administrator who process all tax returns and enforce the tax laws. Increasingly we are outsourcing this function to private firms which goes to show just how bloated this system has become. Millions of Americans take there tax information and have a CPA, Financial Advisor, or a Tax Attorney file the necessary paperwork with the IRS. Sadly many people look forward to this as they can’t wait for a “refund” on their taxes. Refund, it’s your money, you earned it, why should you hope the government gives you some of it back. It would be more accurately termed change. As in here’s your change sir thank you for your business please pull ahead to the next window.

The complexity and inability of the IRS to monitor every person to make sure he or she pays their share of taxes. This gives folks an insensitive to cheat on their taxes or just plain not pay at all. It is impossible to monitor 300 million citizens without a great intrusion on their privacy and civil liberties. Not to mention the folks who don’t pay taxes cause they are not citizens of the United States but benefit from the services that are provided. With a sales tax everyone pays their share through the purchase of goods and services citizen, foreign national, or illegal immigrant.

With sales tax people become more aware of what their government cost and most likely will become involved by voting, and contacting their representatives. Unlike Income tax everyone will notice if the government is getting to big and will want it to contract so that the sales tax could be reduced. For more information check out on http://www.thomas.gov and read S1025 “Fair Tax Act of 2007” and contact your Representatives in Congress. The more people who push for this bill the better the chances of it being passed. Isn’t it fair when we all do are share to manage government as the founders intended.
